From the coffee ceremonies in Ethiopia to the present-day bustling coffee industry, women have always played a pivotal role. Yet, their journey has been anything but easy. History of Women’s Influence on the Coffee Industry

 

When we talk about how women are shaping the coffee industry in today's era, let's not forget to recount the contributions they made in our history. There are stories of women who dismantled stereotypes, stood against deep-seated inequalities, and dared to be the change initiators. So let's step back in time and see the glorious timeline where women weren't just brewing coffee; they were brewing change.

 

9th Century – The Birth of Coffee & Women’s Role (Bunna Ceremony)

 

Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee, has a deep-rooted tradition where women have long been the heart of its preparation and serving, both in homes and communal spaces.

 

15th–17th Century – The Rise of Coffee Culture (Ottoman Empire)

 

• Women were integral to the Turkish coffee ceremony, brewing with the cezve. Coffee brewed by women was central to domestic life, from households to palace harems.

• 1662 – Queen Catherine of Braganza (England)
  The queen was introduced to coffee through Portuguese traders and later on helped shape European cafe culture alongside tea.

 

1907–1920s – Alice Foote MacDougall (USA)

 

• Founded The Little Coffee Shop (1919) in Grand Central Terminal.

• Expanded across NYC, redefining coffeehouse experiences.

• 1908 – Melitta Bentz (Germany) – Inventor of the Coffee Filter
  Created the first paper coffee filter to eliminate bitterness and then later on founded Melitta, now a global coffee brand.

 

1978 – Erna Knutsen (USA) – The Woman Behind ‘Specialty Coffee’’

 

She coined the term "speciality coffee," introducing premium-quality, single-origin beans.

 

21st Century – To Present (Women Leading the Coffee Revolution)

 

• In the 21st Century, women-only coffee cooperatives emerged in Colombia, Rwanda, and Ethiopia.

• 2000s - Present:
  Women took the lead as baristas, roasters, and cafe owners, breaking industry stereotypes.

Smashing Gender Stereotypes in the Coffee Domain

 

In the previous section, we travelled back in time to see the contribution of women, but this was not a cakewalk. The industry was gripped with deeply rooted stereotypes that hindered this success trajectory. Since time immemorial, coffee has largely been a male-dominated industry, whether in operations like roasting, farming, or even behind the station. Although the above facts have sadly been the reality, women rose above them and contributed immensely. Let’s break down some of the common stereotypes they shattered, with all the grace and grandeur.

Stereotype 1: "Women are not meant to be coffee farmers, they just assist men."

 

Coffee farming was seen as a back-breaking, technical job best left to men- because, of course, only they could handle the complexity of growing beans, right? Meanwhile, women were relegated to “supporting roles” like picking, sorting, and drying. But here’s the twist: women now make up nearly 70% of the global coffee production workforce!

Cultivating Change:

• Coffee cooperatives run by women are strengthening the industry in Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Colombia by guaranteeing decent pay and improved working conditions.

• The International Women’s Coffee Alliance, a global nonprofit organisation, was founded in 2003 and works with the sole vision of empowering women in the coffee industry.

 

Stereotype 2: “Baristas are generally men, as women lack the skills and dedication”

 

There is a common misconception that men are the only suitors for barista profiles and that women in cafes are only suited to take orders. Of course, this misconception is totally “missed as women baristas outperform and are also winning global championships. Hence, proving that when it comes to coffee, talent- not gender- steams to the top!

 

Cultivating Change:

• In 2018, Agnieszka Rojewska became the first woman to win the World Barista Championship, a contest that had been historically dominated by men.

 

Stereotype 3: “Women as coffee entrepreneurs are pure misfits”

 

It has always been said that entrepreneurship is a tough grind, while business acumen is seen as a man’s trait. But guess what? Women in the coffee world have been brewing success long before it was a trend. They have been busy building empires, roasting competition, and proving that the business mind is independent of gender.

• Asha Gomez (USA/India) – Founder of Coffee and Culture:
  An Indian-American chef and entrepreneur, Asha is dedicated to promoting South Indian coffee traditions, with her unique combination of heritage and innovation.

• Rachel Peterson (Panama) – Owner of Hacienda La Esmeralda:
  One of the most influential figures in speciality coffee, Rachel’s family farm in Panama is renowned for producing Geisha coffee, one of the world’s most expensive and sought-after beans.
   

Stereotype 4: "Latte art and coffee roasting are highly technical- any day men will do it in a better way”

• Jibbi Little, an Australian barista, has won multiple latte art championships, breaking the stereotype that intricate coffee artistry is a male-dominated craft. Her skills and creativity have earned her a massive global following.
