Are We Buying “European Coffee Culture”… or Just Paying for the Label

In India, we often hear one line:
“We want an Italian machine.”
But very few people pause to understand the science, technology, economics, and business logic behind that decision.

Let’s compare cultures first:

1 Coffee is a lifestyle in Europe.
In most European countries, people step out, grab a coffee, and leave. It’s a daily ritual — sometimes twice a day.
In India, coffee is a social activity. We go with friends, sit for hours, work from cafés, and usually one person visits a café once a week, not twice a day.

2 The price reality is completely different.
An average cappuccino in Europe costs Euro 5–7.INR -550-700
In India, it’s Euro 1.5–3. INR -200-300
Same machine economics, totally different revenue reality.

3 The café format is different.
In Europe, a speciality café often has:

•              A small bar

•              A bakery display

•              Minimal food

•              Focus only on coffee

In India, customers expect:

•              A full kitchen

•              A big menu

•              Multiple cuisines

Which means much higher CAPEX, more equipment, more staff, more complexity.

4  Now let’s talk about the machine buying mindset.
In Europe, people don’t say: “I want an Asian or Indian brand.”
They buy local brands, latest technology, and what makes business sense.

In India, ironically, many buyers don’t realise that:
A lot of “European” machines being sold are outdated models, old technology, and dumped stock, sold only in the name of being Italian. Which are actually not Italian

5 And then comes the real cost: after-sales & spares.
The importer sells you a dream.
When a part fails:

•              You wait weeks or months

•              Spares are imported

•              Costs are high

•              Your café suffers

So ask yourself honestly:

Are you running a European business model in an Indian market?
Or are you just paying European prices with Indian economics?

Buying a coffee machine is not a branding decision. It’s a business decision.

The smart approach is simple:
Buy technology. Buy reliability. Buy support. Buy what fits your market. Not just a label.

Because in the end:
A good machine should improve your business. Not just your brochure.
